Come See The Wilder Side of Chris

I’ve been wanting to show this clip for a while. Back in January, I shot a promo video for a great photographer and good friend, Kevin Jairaj of KJ Images. Anyway, this video is for the WPPI convention in Vegas and he wanted me to sit on it for a while. Today, he gave me the greenlight to show it to the world so here it is.

There was one rule and one rule only: make it rock! I think we achieved that goal with this video. I had alot of fun shooting it and stepping out of my comfort zone and I think you’ll like the results. If you ever had doubts that Chris W can “go there”, wonder no more!

It’s Going to Be A Great Year

To my many readers (all 10 of you), my apologies for not being more diligent in updating the blog. It’s been a busy but fruitful week as I’ve been working over time on getting my 2006 weddings out the door in preparation for the coming ’07 wedding season. In the process of editing these weddings, I’ve further refined my stylized doc style and I feel I’m closer to the ideal of creating a wedding documentary that looks, feels, and sounds like a major motion picture rather than your run of the mill wedding video. I’ve also discovered some fresh techniques for improving the pacing and structure of my videos so you’ll never have to hit the “next chapter” button ever again. When I get the couples’ blessings, I’ll be glad to share what I mean on this very blog.

I’ve also started the long over due process of updating my Sampler DVD to reflect my new style and outlook toward wedding video. On it, there are trailers, excerpts from several weddings, a Love Story in its entirety, as well as a cool clip or two that defies classification. I’m going back and forth on audio commentary right now. It just depends on if I have enough to say to fill 1 1/2 hours!

It’s going to be an exciting year for Watson Videography and I’d love for you to be part of it. If you haven’t found a great wedding videographer yet, please get in touch with me as Summer dates are booking up fast and the Fall dates are starting to be filled. I’ll take good care of you.

Chris W

PS: No Wedding Recap or Trailer this week as I got to have a weekend off. Watch this space next week though as I start a run of 3 more weddings in a row.

Marisa and Dan’s Wedding: 02/17/07

Who is that Masked Videographer?

This weekend I had the honor of documenting Marisa Saenz and Dan Knoff’s wedding. Their ceremony took place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Richardson with the reception taking place at the Addison Event Center. The people responsible for making Marisa look as beautiful as possible (not that it’s a hard job) were makeup & hair artists, Maritza Morales and April Ruiz of Pure Colour. The coordinator that day was Ruth Spirer of Weddings and Events by Ruth. Keeping the party going at the reception was Melody Gualtiere of Melodies and Memories Entertainment. Last but not least, I had the pleasure of once again working with one of Dallas’ best photographers, Kevin Jairaj of KJ Images. Can’t wait to see his interpretation of this wedding. On with my random thoughts….

There’s alot of great moments that happened at Marisa and Dan’s wedding. Meeting each other before the ceremony in the lobby of the hotel, coming into the reception with “Phantom of the Opera” style masquerade masks, or maybe the last dance with bubbles blowing all around them. Those are all great moments to be sure but the one thing that sticks in my mind about this wedding more than anything else was Marisa preparing for her vows the whole day. She was so determined about getting her vows right that she was still going over her lines right to the end. I’m happy to report that she did just fine when she got up there and made it through the vows without a hitch! See for yourself in this inaugural edition of Watson Videography Candids. A collection of some of my favorite moments from any given wedding. Keep in mind this is just cleaned up raw footage and not indicative of the final product!

Although I’m still a few weddings away from editing this, I decided to also cut a quick preview for the bride and groom as well as for those who couldn’t make it to the wedding. Enjoy!

UPDATE: Kevin Jairaj of KJ Images was kind enough to share some of his favorite photos from the day.

As always, it’s an honor to capture a couple’s special day and Dan and Marisa’s was no exception. Have a great life together!

Good Reading: “The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger

I love a good time travel story and if it happens to have a good love story as well, all the better. Luckily, “The Time Traveler’s Wife” is great on both counts. Here’s what Publisher’s Weekly said about it on Amazon. By the way DO NOT read the original article. They put spoilers in the review that would have taken some of the more pleasant surprises of the novel away from me. I omitted those surprises this review spoils.

From Publishers Weekly
This highly original first novel won the largest advance San Francisco-based MacAdam/Cage had ever paid, and it was money well spent. Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes, and one that skates nimbly around a huge conundrum at the heart of the book: Henry De Tamble, a rather dashing librarian at the famous Newberry Library in Chicago, finds himself unavoidably whisked around in time. He disappears from a scene in, say, 1998 to find himself suddenly, usually without his clothes, which mysteriously disappear in transit, at an entirely different place 10 years earlier-or later. During one of these migrations, he drops in on beautiful teenage Clare Abshire, an heiress in a large house on the nearby Michigan peninsula, and a lifelong passion is born. The problem is that while Henry’s age darts back and forth according to his location in time, Clare’s moves forward in the normal manner, so the pair are often out of sync. But such is the author’s tenderness with the characters, and the determinedly ungimmicky way in which she writes of their predicament (only once do they make use of Henry’s foreknowledge of events to make money, and then it seems to Clare like cheating) that the book is much more love story than fantasy. It also has a splendidly drawn cast, from Henry’s violinist father, ruined by the loss of his wife in an accident from (omited because it’s a spoiler), to Clare’s odd family and a multitude of Chicago bohemian friends. (REALLY BIG SPOILER HERE that I omited) Henry’s foreordained end is agonizing, but Niffenegger has another card up her sleeve, and plays it with poignant grace. It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with an impression of life’s riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills.

I do want to offer a caution to some of the people who might be offended by sexual content in their books. There’s quite a fair number of steamy scenes that might offend some readers but they are easy to skip over. Just thought I’d throw a warning out there. Not a dealbreaker for me and one of the more pleasant surprises in my reading life. Buy this if you’re waiting for your author’s next book. You might just find another author whose next novel you look forward to reading. I know I have.
